Midsummer, 1145. Walter, the steward of Evesham Abbey, is found dead at the bottom of a well pit. The Abbot, whose relationship with the lord Sheriff of Worcestershire is strained at best, dislikes needing to call in help. However, as the death appears to have not been an accident, he grudgingly receives Undersheriff Hugh Bradecote, Serjeant Catchpoll and Underserjeant Walkelin. The trio know to step carefully with the contentious undercurrents at play.

As the sheriff’s men investigate the steward’s death, they discover that truth is in short supply. With the tensions between the Abbey and the local castle guard reaching boiling point, another killing will force the investigation down a dangerous path.©2024 Sarah Hawkswood (P)2025 W. F. It took me a couple of listens before I really appreciated this book by Sarah Hawkswood. Thought that's probably because the first time I was listening it was late at night and I fell asleep! So hearing it through whilst pottering around the house I realised what a really good book it is. Not that I should be surprised as Sarah Hawkswood has, in the past, written some very good books. I think I was slightly wary this time as I hadn't enjoyed her last one at all and in fact I returned it. But in this she is back to her best. The 'play' between the three main characters just gets better and better as they each bring something different to the cases they investigate.

A really great listen

Great to see these wonderful characters again, and see how they have developed. Loved the story, lots of twists. As always fabulous historical detail all carefully woven through to bring all to life. Loved it.

Wonderful stories without all the overdone gore and horror of many 'murder mystery' stories of today

I live in Worcestershire so can relate to them all but this one was even better. I live in the modern day Mitton, have lived in Kidderminster have friends who have had their weddings in the Ribbesford church, just a few miles away. have walked the landscape , know exactly where the' red bluff' is and have visited and regularly passed 'Hartlebury Castle'

Always enjoy the books and watching the ever developing inter actions between the three main characters feels so real

Love all these books but this one was special

Worth the wait, still the finest medieval sleuthing trio. Rich characters in a rich and authentic feeling world.
