A YA Dragon Rider Fantasy Adventure With A Unique Magic Spin

The journey is treacherous for a fugitive and her injured dragon

Young dragon rider Winnie is on the run with her injured dragon Kygo. Theyre determined to get back to Destia, and warn the Athelian king of a dangerous new power on the rise.

But the threat to Winnie and Kygo doesnt just come from Aramys and his Fantisian troops. Until Winnie understands her new powers, she wont be able to control them. Seeking shelter and answers from a secret clan that shuns Fantisian politics, Winnie discovers her destiny may be even greater than she imagined.

When tragedy strikes, Winnie will need to master her powers to prove herself worthy of the clans support. Controlling her lifeforce magic is the key to defeating Aramys and protecting her kingdom.

Winnie must learn to accept her changing powers if she is ever going to make it home. If she fails, she, her dragon, and all of Destia will pay the price.

Winnie and her linked dragon, Kygo will have joined up in the first book, which I haven't read. I think you will enjoy this book more if you have a deeper understanding of their backstory. However, mention of previous events were sufficient to follow the plot in this one. Winnie has been betrayed and managed to escape along with another character who shared the prison with the dragon. Their opponents had been experimenting upon the captives and have unwittingly gifted Winnie with a special power, life force magic. Her main task is to rescue the rest of her delegation operating in enemy land on a mercy mission. We hear of her resourcefiulness and ingenuity in helping her companions and others. The reader also witnesses her growth in understanding and learning about her power and how to wield it safely. Therer are action scenes and I felt invested in the main characters, but felt the climax was a bit rushed and unlikely. The ending is not a cliff-hanger, but leaves the door open for our feisty, teenage , heroine and her dragon companion to have more adventures.

The narrator has to voice male, female and dragon voices and performs well although I felt some of the "baddies" were a bit hammed up.

Believe in yourself!
The author tells Destia's story in a compelling way, highlighting the emotions of all the main characters. The situation calls for discernment: who can be trusted? How can one hide one's fears while seeking sensible solutions, despite a lack of experience? I recommend this book to anyone who loves stories about dragon riders and the complications that come with them.
