Sloane West is an ex-New York City cop turned private investigator, Irish whiskey aficionado, and untrained witch in an emotional slump. Her mother just died, and her ex-best friend and ex-lover have sent her an invitation to their upcoming nuptials. Thankfully, a solicitor arrives and distracts her faster than a night of drinking Jameson neat with news that Sloane has inherited her late grandparents'—who she didn't know existed—island estate.

When Sloane refuses, the solicitor encourages her to at least visit her mother's birthplace. Eager to discover her magical roots and a birthright her mother hid, Sloane agrees. As she's finalizing travel plans, a man kicks in her door and turns a gun on her, but Sloane kills him with her unchecked magical strength. Now she has to figure out who wants her dead.

On the island, she first discovers family and friends who stand with her in her investigation. And as the attacks on Sloane and her newly found coven intensify, Sloane must choose whether to embraces her power as a protector, or flee from her birthright.

Really enjoyed this. The ‘who done it’ aspect was really good and keeping me guessing who and why, the characters were interesting and the magic was nicely original. All in all well worth a credit and I’d love to listen to the next in the series.

So ironically what caught my attention was the poor review about the book. They said about lack of understanding about magical etc so I thought I'd give it a try from a different view.

I found this book easy to follow and understand, love the story line and a good set to to follow on.

want to know much more about the characters.

I think if you like magical, this is a nice introductory book

Great book

Not a fan of magic so did not enjoy this title and cannot finish it. I am very disappointed because I enjoyed this author's previous saphic crime mystery and was looking forward to another similar one.
Regardless, if I was into magical stories I would still be frustrated and annoyed with this audiobook for the following reasons:
(1) The various accents the narrator gives many of the characters are really, really bad and incredibly distracting.
(2) The story has so many different characters and is so convoluted it is very difficult to follow.
(3) The audiobook, and possibly the written version too, need a diagram in pdf format to accompany the story and show who the characters are and how they relate to one another.
(4) The witchy magical language needs a glossary with an accompanying pdf for the audiobook.

Magic and crime in a very uncomfortable combination
