The Civil War battle waged on September 17, 1862, at Antietam Creek, Maryland, was one of the bloodiest in the nation's history: On this single day, the battle claimed nearly 23,000 casualties. In Landscape Turned Red, the renowned historian Stephen Sears draws on a remarkable cache of diaries, dispatches, and letters to recreate the vivid drama of Antietam as experienced not only by its leaders but also by its soldiers, both Union and Confederate. Combining brilliant military analysis with narrative history of enormous power, Landscape Turned Red is the definitive work on this climactic and bitter struggle.©1983 Stephen W. having previously read the book I found the listen absolutely worthy, but if you don't know the campaign and movements of troops on the map you are going to struggle. it will still be entertaining but you won't really understand what's happening and where.

loved it, but you need hard copy maps

Sears weaves a compelling narrative from the complex and potentially confusing events of the day and his words are beautifully read by the narrator. Having just read the same author’s equally absorbing account of Gettysburg I hope that the publishers will consider an audio version of that too.

Masterly account
