Thank you so much to Rina Kent and her team for providing me with the ALC of this book. Listening to it and reading along was an immersive experience, and the full-cast audiobook did not disappoint. I got to hear some of my favourite voices and even discovered a few new ones. Seriously, whoever voiced Kayden Lockwood/Davenport, I need that voice on repeat… because DAMN. This age-gap, professor-student romance had me hot under the collar. Kiss the Villain follows Gareth Carson, and if you’ve read the RinaVerse, you’ll know he’s the older brother of Killian Carson from God of Malice. The timeline of this book takes place a little before God of Malice, and it spans the duration of that book and others in the Legacy of Gods series (minus God of War). It even makes you wonder if all the characters in that series were at Heathon’s initiation that day 😂 Gareth is the stereotypical golden boy: a genius law student, heir to the Carson empire, and the dutiful son. Or at least, that’s how he appears on the surface. Deep down, like his brother, he’s got a burning desire to set the world on fire. But he keeps these impulses under control, rarely indulging in chaos. That is, until one night of reckless behavior goes wrong, and he finds himself caught by a villain. Gareth tries to bury the incident with his other secrets, but everything changes when the man from that night walks into his classroom—his new professor, Kayden Lockwood. A criminal teaching criminal law. Gareth can't expose what he's done without revealing his hidden life, but he can certainly force Kayden to taste the poison he gave him. In this clash of titans, both men break and crumble, and Gareth begins to realise this dangerous game might have no winners. There’s tension, angst, plot twists I never saw coming, and Easter eggs for future books. We also get cameos from our favourite characters in previous books. All in all, this was such a fun read. Now, the one thing I wasn’t a fan of... the feminisation kink. I know some readers are into it, but it’s just not my thing. That said, I found myself relating to Gareth in other ways. Not that I’m a hidden psycho, but he’s constantly seeking validation, and I can definitely relate to that. Gareth is a complex character—unlike his brother, who embraces and idolises his demons, Gareth hides his, and they surface in unexpected ways. This is where Kayden comes in. He’s exactly what Gareth needs—someone who calms his demons and provides an outlet for him to be himself. The banter between Kayden and Gareth is immaculate, and their back-and-forth, filled with tension, had me flipping the pages (or, in my case, listening intently). I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it—just make sure to check your triggers first.
