When your life is a lie, who can you trust?

When Maggie Taylor accepts a new job in Manchester, she is sure it is the right move for her family. The children have settled well, although her husband, Duncan, doesn't appear to be so convinced. But nothing prepares her for the shock of coming home from work one night to find that Duncan has disappeared, leaving their young children alone. His phone is dead, and she has no idea where he has gone or why. And then she discovers she's not the only one looking for him.

When a woman who looks just like Maggie is brutally murdered and DCI Tom Douglas is brought in to investigate, Maggie realises how little she knows about Duncan's past. Is he the man she loves? Who is he running from?

She doesn't have long to decide whether to trust him or betray him. Because one thing has been made clear to Maggie - another woman will die soon, and it might be her.

This is my first time listening to an Audio book and certainly won't be my last. Equally it was my first book by Rachel Abbott and again it won't be my last. Gripping from start to finish, and beautifully read by Lisa Coleman. My dilemma now is which one do I listen to next!

Second Reading/Listening
Happy to say my review still stands, I read this title in 2016 now again in 2020 Brilliant Read

"Fantastic Read"

All the way through this book I emphasised with the lead character Maggie, feeling her pain, frustration and shock at the great lie that was her life with her husband. I felt a little comfort that at least she had a work colleague to talk to even though she could not divulge it all. This colleague is a master in his own right, Rachel Abbott kept this gem right until the very end of the book. I won't spoil it for you but imagine you had what was a great marriage, two beautiful children a solace from the tough world of your job as a criminal defence lawyer, then one day your world is blown apart. Glimmers of the Man you once knew and one of the reasons you fell in love with him was all based on a lie, as it unravels you realise how gullible you had become. How far would you go to protect what is left of your life?

The DCI Tom Douglas & his side kick Becky make an amazing team, peeling back the layers of the case and never giving up the search for the truth.

Rachel Abbott this is a great book and an addictive story from start to finish.

Amazing Book

I read this book after reading the back road, not having realised I'd missed out some books between. Although there were some convenient coincidences (including links to a crime spree 12 years ago) the story is extremely well told and the characters developed really well as we go through the story.
The story telling is really good and I actually looked forward to the next instalment to find out what would happen next. There are a few twists and turns as the story progresses to an excellent ending (the close of this story is very well done). Rachel Abbott is rapidly coming one of my favourite authors - I love her style and will return and read the novels I've missed out in the series

Excellent character development
