London. 1894.

'I am not a detective, chief constable.'

'No, but you are a poet, a freemason and a man of the world. All useful qualifications for the business in hand.'

So says Police Chief Macnaghten to Oscar Wilde, in a Chelsea drawing room in the company of Arthur Conan Doyle. The business they are gathered to discuss is none other than the case of Jack the Ripper, the most notorious murderer in England.

And thus the three men set out to solve one of the world's most famous mysteries - the ultimate truth about the identity of Jack the Ripper.

Case Closed is Arthur Conan Doyle's account of the events of 1894, the year of the return of Jack the Ripper. Based on Oscar Wilde's real-life friendship with Conan Doyle and the extraordinary but little-known fact that in 1894 the detective in charge of the Jack the Ripper investigations was Oscar Wilde's neighbour in Tite Street, Chelsea, this is a revelatory and gripping detective story, combining the intrigue of a classic murder mystery with a witty and compelling portrait of one of the greatest characters of the Victorian age.

Gyles Brandreth is something of a 'Marmite' character; personally I happen to be rather fond of both. You might think that everything that might have been said about the supposed identity of Jack the Ripper had indeed already been said. However, Mr Brandreth, through the eyes of Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle, approaches the subject with real originality, posing questions other 'investigations' might not have properly considered - what was London, and in particular Whitechapel, like in 1888? A place where anything and everything was available - at a price. Mr Brandreth conjures up a Victorian London so real you can almost smell it, and seasons it liberally with factual celebrities of the period. I cannot say I agree with his conclusions, but it it as valid a theory as any other i have encountered. As an added bonus, he reads the text himself in rich and textured tones and demonstrates the English language in the way it is meant to be spoken.

A Real Pea Souper!

Loved this book. Gyles Brandreth read this well written tale beautifully. Hard to stop listening as wanted to know what happened next. Highly recommend this book.

Great book.

An enjoyable listen but not brilliant. Very derivative of Conan Doyle, with Conan Doyle playing the part of Dr Watson to Wilde’s Holmes. Unfortunately it doesn’t live up to a real Sherlock Holmes story. It’s long-winded in parts, with too many Oscar Wilde quotes and with a good few characters who contribute nothing to the story apart from a famous name. Is there such a thing as historical name dropping?
The narration is fine. Gyles has a lovely voice, but it was difficult to distinguish between the different characters at times.

Quite good
