For 13 years Pen and Cara have had a tumultuous relationship crammed with bickering and intimacy, recrimination and desire.

When Cara dies in a car crash, Pen is left to cope with a secret widowhood. Along with that burden comes a hidden story of painful and pleasurable memories.

With humour and poignancy, Hood follows Pen through the week of Cara’s death; through the paralysis of grief and the ecstasy of nostalgia to a point where mourning and making a new life melt into one.

Beautifully observed micro level analysis of human behaviour after grief. Touches upon class, regret, memories and complicated, nuanced relationships.

Detailed, witty observation of human behaviour

This book tackles the unappetising subject of the loss of a lover and manages to infuse it with such dignity and humour that it is as hard to put down as any action fuelled blockbuster. The main character, the grieving Pen, is portrayed so vividly that I found myself really living her loss alongside her. Truly a beautiful book.

Devastatingly real

I adore Emma Donoghue and am constantly astonished by her ability to explore different genres and express the smallest details of emotions. However this one just left me untouched. I wasn’t sure the point of it, apart from the unfolding of one person’s grief and even then it felt at one step removed. Nope.

Left me unmoved
