Özet

A Warhammer 40,000 Audiobook

A double-barrelled set of novels from Dan Abnett, exploring the Adeptus Arbites attempts to enforce Imperial law on a sprawling hive planet amid scandals, cults, and much worse.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Head down into the depths of a hive world, where a corrupted planetary governor has sent the populace into a perilous spiral they may not recover from. Will the population revolt? Can the Adeptus Arbites save this benighted world?

THE STORY

Welcome to Sacramentus. Austerity and toil will teach the true measure of the Hive's failing. No one is blameless. The planetary governor has fallen, deposed in scandal and treachery. The Adeptus Arbites roam the smog-choked vertics and zontals, rooting out traitors, enforcing the Imperial law without mercy.

As a new governor, an outsider, is crowned, the Hive teeters between order and anarchy. Whispers of rebellion echo from the heights of the Waistland to the depths of the Neg. Rival gangs seize both opportunity and territory, and forbidden cults grow ever bolder. But unbeknownst to all, a more terrifying threat awaits in the darkness.

May your light last, pilgrim. If the Emperor protects, perhaps we shall make it out alive.

Written by Dan Abnett. Narrated by Toby Longworth. Runtime 24 hours and 26 minutes approx.

I have always enjoyed Dan Abnett’s writing but this was epic.
A story of life, intrigue, and death in the eyes and words of the normal people of The Hive, All That Is. It’s hard to say lots without spoiling the story. Some people have struggled with the first few chapters of world building, but, get through this and you’ll be rewarded with an excellent story.
Dan manages to create believable and relatable characters within the WH40k universe. I’ve never played the game but have enjoyed all aspects of the Lore. But mostly have enjoyed stories about normal, mundane humanity.

Super story and world building

I normally never review audio books, but Dan has absolutely knocked it out of the park with this. Most books you can anticipate the ending but I had no idea where this was going to go from the start. the only negative thing about this was how quickly I got through it I couldn't stop listening. you need to give it a shot

you absolutely need to listen

If you're a fan of the Eisenhorn series, you'll love this.

An excellent blend of perspectives and immersion within a hive.

One of the Best

This is bar none THE defining (gargantuan) novel of Warhammer 40k. Not only is this the most detailed recounting of a functioning hive life, but it is also a perfect encapsulation of the 40k universe. Some may find the lack of closure disheartening but for me, that is what makes this the perfect Warhammer 40k novel: it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if you do your job diligently and are a competent God-Emperor fearing citizen of the Imperium (and unlike many other Warhammer novels, the majority of characters are quite competent at their jobs). It simply does not matter. There's a point in the novel where you piece together the masterfully sprinkled pieces into a coherent picture and understand... There is no hope. There is no salvation. And the title of the last Chapter... oh my. What a delightfully poignant encapsulation of what it is to be a human (whether the lowest dreg of society or a member of the highest echelons of Imperial hierarchy).

This is proper grimdark. Not a mere excess of gore, violence or swearing. But a simple realisation of hopelessness, of despair, of the futility of every decision made... And yet. One final act of defiance to defy the enemy. One final act in the name of the God Emperor of Mankind who sits on the Throne Without...

The definitive Warhammer 40k experience

I nearly DNFd this book as I struggled with the first couple of hours but then it settled and became a superb book on life, death and ignorance in an imperial hive/world

Slow start but gets sooo much better!
