Shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2016

A BBC Radio 4 Book Club pick

Discover Graeme Macrae Burnet’s groundbreaking Booker-shortlisted novel featuring authentic Highland voices and the author narrating his own introduction. A captivating documentary-style production that is also a mind-bending work of metafiction.

“A fiendishly readable tale.” The Guardian

“An astonishing piece of writing” The Telegraph

“Gripping, blackly playful and intelligent.” The Times

The year is 1869. A brutal triple murder in a remote community in the Scottish Highlands leads to the arrest of a young man by the name of Roderick Macrae.

A memoir written by the accused makes it clear that he is guilty, but it falls to the country's finest legal and psychiatric minds to uncover what drove him to commit such merciless acts of violence. Was he mad? Only the persuasive powers of his advocate stand between Macrae and the gallows.

In this, Graeme Macrae Burnet tells an irresistible and original story about the provisional nature of truth, even when the facts seem clear. His Bloody Project is a mesmerising literary thriller and set in an unforgiving landscape where the exercise of power is arbitrary.

Found this so compelling and unable to stop once I started. I felt the layers of injustice for the people in the story. Highly recommend

Incredible story, really well put together, and some of the best narration I’ve ever listened to. Listened to it in almost one sitting it was so captivating.

Enthralling listen

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, not being of the type I would normally read nor listen to but it was sufficiently good for me to read the book and listen to the audio version. The research is exceptional and as a Scot I found it truly evocative both of the geographical area and the period in history.

Truly evocative writing

This is a great book that conjures up the world of a 19th crofting village, while telling the core story in an original and compelling way. It’s really well read too.

Brilliant and original novel

Great narration and a well told story. The themes are as relevant today as they were when the story is set. Thought provoking right to the very end. I really enjoyed this audio book.

Gritty and compelling.
