A feverish re-imagining of literature’s most infamous romantic villain.

The Heathcliff we know is obsessive, possessive and cruel, bound and beholden to his childhood love and would-be soulmate Catherine, and their home at Wuthering Heights. But before his descent into monstrous revenge, there were three missing years. A time of possibility, freedom and a different kind of love…

With Cathy’s rejection burning hot in his ears, Heathcliff flees the moors and arrives in London, seeking distraction and oblivion. There he is rescued by Sir Francis Barber, the Black adopted son of Samuel Johnson who urges him to forge his own path. Along the way he meets the reckless gambler, Lord Montgomery and the beautiful courtesan Rhoda Pascal, and begins to chart a path towards fortune, and belonging. In growing closer to Rhoda, he starts to untangle the mystery of who he is, but Cathy's ghostly presence, calling to him like a siren song, draws him ever back to his own dark nature, and the bewildering memories of Wuthering Heights...

Starring Daryl McCormack (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) as Heathcliff; with Arinzé Kene (The Pass), Charlie Rowe (Slow Horses), Gracie Oddie-James (The Lady from the Sea), Sagar Radia (Industry), Raffey Cassidy (The Brutalist) and Tanya Moodie (Silo).

Written by Gracie Oddie-James. Directed by Mahalia Belo.

Editorial Review

Longing, vengeance, and so much more
As evidenced by the perennial success of Wuthering Heights (we can only assume the newest movie adaptation will not be the last), and our endless fascination with Heathcliff, yearning and revenge are more than enough to fill up a character. But Emily Brontë left us a mysterious three-year gap in his history that the original text can't really account for. Where did he go and what did he do? All we know is he came back rich and ruthless. It's possible Brontë's own lived experience couldn't extend to fill in this window, but actress and writer Gracie Oddie-James is well-positioned to. In this breathtaking multicast dramatization featuring Daryl McCormack as the titular hero, Oddie-James rounds out this era of Heathcliff's journey—one filled with both ambition and shame, and a wrestling with self-identity, imagining how a mixed-race man would have had to navigate 18th-century London. Perhaps he found love (Rhoda is voiced by Oddie-James), acceptance, even a glimmer of peace, though, as all Brontë fans know, he continued to be haunted by the ever-present apparition of Catherine. Just as Wide Sargasso Sea added a new dimension to Jane Eyre, this new immersive listen shows us Heathcliff in an entirely new light. —Emily C., Audible Editor

A completely satisfying journey into Heathcliff’s years away. A fantastic story with political, violent and sensual twists and turns. A wonderful female lead in Rhoda too.

Brilliant & gripping!

This story was such a pleasure to listen to. The voice actors did a fantastic job, and the story was beautifully told. I thought it was way too short and would have loved to listen to it for longer. Is there more?

Loved it!

I listened to this on Audible. It was very immersive with dramatisation going on in the background.

This is a story of what Heathcliff got up to in London and how he made his fortune before going back to Kathy. It also reveals a bit about where he may come from.

It was a good listen and enjoyable

immersive with great actors and actresses
