Even though her family has very little money, 11-year-old Jenny loves her life in China. But after her stepfather dies unexpectedly, and her mother falls ill with a deadly lung disease, Jenny's world unravels. Suddenly she finds herself on a long ocean voyage to America--to live with a grandfather she has never seen. Jenny wonders what it will be like living with her rich grandfather. But when she arrives, she discovers she isn't expected--and no one believes her story.

With nowhere else to go, she accepts the position of servant girl there. But her troubles have only begun. As Jenny dusts and scrubs, she learns the great, gloomy house holds shadowy secrets and hidden dangers.

Edgar Award-winning author Barbara Brooks Wallace pens historical mysteries filled with riveting suspense and authentic details. In this Victorian tale of betrayal and deception, she portrays a young girl building a new life in spite of overwhelming odds. Narrator Christina Moore's dramatic performance highlights the tension as it builds to the startling climax.
