I have been waiting years to find a digital release of these classic readings. Sir Michael Hordern’s readings of M.R. James’ subtle ghost stories cannot be bettered in my view. The delicate variability of his tone perfectly conveys the mix of scholarliness, domesticity and horror that characterises these wonderful stories. Thank you, Audible!

Incomparable readings of the most subtle of English ghost stories

I discovered MR JAMES in my 20’s (now 50’s). The tales are told so well by Sir Michael Horden in a calm manner, however these tales have such a sting in the tail, that I dare you to listen to them in the dark…

A chill down the spine

Has Michael Hordern ever been equalled? Not as far as I know.
No matter what he reads...

Wonderful

Michael Hordern is simply the best performer of M R James's eerie works. This recording, though muffled in places, cannot be bettered.
