Vernon Alverstoke sees no reason to put himself out for anyone.

But when a distant connection asks for help, he is quickly plunged into one drama after another by the disorderly Merriville family.

Surprisingly, he finds himself far from bored - especially when he encounters their strong-minded daughter, Frederica.

However, she seems far more concerned with her family's welfare than his romantic advances...

Eleştirmen yorumları

If you want to escape lockdown completely, then I recommend any novel by Georgette Heyer, or indeed, all her novels. They are absolutely delicious tales of Regency heroes, winsome heroines, fops, dandies, dastardly baddies and lots of sumptuous descriptions of silk-lined bonnets, cravats and breeches. Utter, immersive escapism. Try starting off with Frederica. (SOPHIE KINSELLA)

My favourite historical novelist -- stylish, romantic, sharp, and witty. Her sense of period is superb, her heroines are enterprising, and her heroes dashing. I owe her many happy hours (Margaret Drabble)

Triumphantly good (India Knight)

Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic (Katie Fforde)

A writer of great wit and style

Frederica is one of my favourite Heyers. I own the old audio version but I feel the narrator's performance of the main male character makes him sound positively ancient! This new one fares better with a narrator who, despite the mis-pronunciations that seem to blight these new versions, gives an overall performance which balances them out. It's an easy listen and thoroughly enjoyable. Sadly, overall I have been very disappointed by the new Heyer recordings and have found many of them far inferior to the earlier versions. Thankfully I purchased all the ones I wanted before they were removed from Audible.
