Flat Spin is the first installment in David Freed’s acclaimed thriller series featuring Cordell Logan, a sardonic pilot with dwindling savings and a shadowy past.

Flying out of California’s sunny Rancho Bonita, Cordell Logan is a flight instructor and aspiring Buddhist whose attempt at a quiet(er) life is shattered when his ex-wife Savannah arrives on his doorstep. Her new husband—and Logan’s former comrade-in-arms—Arlo Echevarria, has been murdered and she needs his help.

Logan and Echevarria used to be members of a top-secret military assassination team known as Alpha. Savannah begs him to tell the police what he knows in order to help them solve the murder, but sharing that sort of information raises both ethical and practical concerns. After an attempt on Logan’s own life it becomes clear that this goes deeper than he thought, and that solving the murder himself may be the only way to ensure his—and Savannah’s—safety.

Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter David Freed brings his own experience to bare in this brilliant binge-worthy mystery perfect for fans of Robert B. Parker and Robert Rotstein.

I really enjoyed the light-hearted 1st person narration of this book, the story was interesting and not too heavy. My reason for dropping a star is that I really didn't like the ex-wife that our hero was besotted with. I didn't understand why she had to be such a self centred madam.
Overall though, I liked Cordell Logan and liked his flippant attitude. I found myself chuckling out loud on a couple of occasions.

I began listening to David Freed’s books in a backward order. The last books were included in my membership - I was immediately hooked. I had to buy the rest of them.
Brilliantly written, intriguing and funny, my kind of sarcasm. Can’t wait for the next one.
What can I say about Ray Porter ?
Ray is amazing - my favorite narrator, I choose books just because of him. Thank you Ray.

Amazing, funny, twisted

I enjoyed this a lot, the hero is a great character and I loved his humour, some of which I found a tiny bit reminiscent of Carl Hiaasen although there was nothing of the surreal here. I didn't find his ex-wife so convincing as a character, I felt she was more two-dimensional but I liked the book and narrator so much I went and bought Voodoo Ridge and enjoyed that too. I am always looking for books that aren't too terribly gory but have good twists and turns, it is quite hard to find them and I give up on quite a number of books before the end because they're too gratuitously graphic for me. This one did have some gory bits but not too many and I could cope.

The narrator is excellent and really inhabits the character, he was totally convincing for me and I was sorry to see that the second book in the series is narrated by someone else.

Really enjoyed this book

Witty, tense, sheer entertainment and one of my favourite narrators especially for easy, non taxing, listening. Which is sometimes all you want.

Thoroughly entertaining
