What was Mr. Darcy’s life like before he met Elizabeth Bennet? Before he stepped onto the Pride and Prejudice stage at the Meryton assembly? More importantly, where is he and what is he doing all the time he’s absent from the page thereafter? And what is his relationship to a woman named Amelia?

With Fitzwilliam Darcy in His Own Words, the iconic literary hero finally tells his own story, from the traumas of his early life to the consummation of his love for Elizabeth and everything in between. This is not a variation but a supplement to the original story, chronicled in Darcy’s point of view - a behind-the-scenes look at the things Jane Austen didn’t tell us.

As it happens, Darcy’s journey was more tortuous than he let on, his happy ending with Elizabeth in jeopardy at every turn in his struggle between duty and his heart’s desire, between the suitable lady he has promised to marry and the woman he can't stop thinking about.

Although I have never understood the attraction of Mr Darcy, preferring the dark, brooding Mr Rochester, I enjoy Pride and Prejudice as much as anyone. This work conjured up the stuffy reserved Mr D perfectly, and the narrator was perfect. Well written and well crafted, I would recommend it to any Austen fan.

There’s something very special about listening to a man in love talk about the woman he is in love with. This book does it in a delightful way

So romantic!

As a Austen fan I was not sure if this would add to the P&P experience but thought I would give it a go. Found it a charming listen. Although some is a bit Mills and Boony on the whole it does give Darcy’s perspective in a way that rounds out some of the central scenes in an interesting way, fills out some of the gaps where Darcy is absent in the book and gives a bit more context to the Darcy/Wickham relationship.

A charming viewpoint.

I’m an avid P&P listener with about 60 in my audible library at last count. This one is a gem; the story is entirely true to the original, but manages to make it seem a whole new story by developing sun-plots that could very plausibly have been going on alongside. Narration by Harry Frost superb as always.

Loved it!

The story is imaginative, but differs greatly from P&P in parts that should not.

Good but.......
