Michael O'Brien presents a thrilling apocalyptic novel about the condition of the Roman Catholic Church at the end of time. It explores the state of the modern world, and the strengths and weaknesses of the contemporary religious scene, by taking his central character, Father Elijah Schäfer, a Carmelite priest, on a secret mission for the Vatican which embroils him in a series of crises and subterfuges affecting the ultimate destiny of the Church.

Father Elijah is a convert from Judaism, a survivor of the Holocaust, a man once powerful in Israel. For twenty years he has been "buried in the dark night of Carmel" on the mountain of the prophet Elijah. The Pope and the Cardinal Secretary of State call him out of obscurity and give him a task of the highest sensitivity: to penetrate into the inner circles of a man whom they believe may be the Antichrist. Their purpose: to call the Man of Sin to repentance, and thus to postpone the great tribulation long enough to preach the Gospel to the whole world.

In this richly textured tale, Father Elijah crosses Europe and the Middle East, moves through the echelons of world power, meets saints and sinners, presidents, judges, mystics, embattled Catholic journalists, faithful priests and a conspiracy of traitors within the very House of God. This is an apocalypse in the old literary sense, but one that was written in the light of Christian revelation.

Absolutely fantastic book!

I was concerned to begin with, that I would not get into it with it being 600 pages long.

I was enthralled and totally absorbed by the story line and the thriller behind it all, especially with how deep my faith is and the journey I have been going through.

I was a little unsure whether to listen to it on audible too as I was worried I wouldn’t take it in, but I’m so glad I did! The amount of times I gasped when something happened and the close people to Father Elijah would fall short to some unfortunate fate.

I would definitely recommend this book - especially with everything that has been happening with our current Holy Father, Pope Leo and that worm that is Donald Trump.

Fantastic

I am still reeling from how good this book was. It's not often I listen to a book, then immediately order it in print while starting to listen again. The narrator wasn't perfect, but oh boy did he give it everything. I loved his interpretation of the main character and of Billy in particular, and although the female characters were a wee bit squeaky I was able to suspend disbelief and care about them, particularly Ruth and Anna.

Some of the chapters were so stunningly good that I had to listen to them twice before I finished my first run through. Ruth and Warsaw in particular, not to mention the angels. Not just the text compelled me in these sections but also the narrator's interpretation. The man must know his scripture - it was interwoven so seamlessly into the story, yet he never stumbled or misinterpreted it. The dream sequences and visions were read in such a way that the terrifying poetry came through. By the end of the book both Father Elijah and the narrator felt like old friends.

This was very well narrated and the story moved at a good pace. A very thought provoking story and I am keen to read the follow up book. The author really takes the reader into the lives of the characters which makes the story gripping and emotional. Well worth listening to.

Excellent narration and gripping story.

This was a well researched and knitted together story with well grown characters. An uncanny anticipation of world wide developments.

Breadth of storytelling

I love end times literature but am not Catholic, so came to this recommended listen with some reservations. However, I found it a captivating listen. It is a bit like a cricket match - periods of normality laced with moments of pure drama. But the story captures you and it is something to really immerse yourself in. The two Confession chapters feel like a needless diversions from the main plot, but are mini-masterpiece in Christian apologetics. The narration of the main character was simply brilliant. As another reviewer has said, the narration of the women was a bit screechy, but is easy to overlook. I will listen to this many times. We need books 1 and 3 on Audible NOW!

Increasingly captivating
