From the author of Lost Souls, Drawing Blood, and Wormwood comes a thrilling and chilling novel that best-selling author Peter Straub says serves as a “guidebook to hell”.

To serial slayer Andrew Compton, murder is an art, the most intimate art. After feigning his own death to escape from prison, Compton makes his way to the United States with the sole ambition of bringing his “art” to new heights. Tortured by his own perverse desires, and drawn to possess and destroy young boys, Compton inadvertently joins forces with Jay Byrne, a dissolute playboy who has pushed his “art” to limits even Compton hadn’t previously imagined. Together, Compton and Byrne set their sights on an exquisite young Vietnamese-American runaway, Tran, whom they deem to be the perfect victim.

Swiftly moving from the grimy streets of London’s Piccadilly Circus to the decadence of the New Orleans French Quarter, Poppy Z. Brite dissects the landscape of torture and invites us into the mind of a killer. Exquisite Corpse confirms Brite as a writer who defies categorization. It is a novel for those who dare trespass where the sacred and profane become one.

the voices for the separate characters are so distinct and well done that at times it felt more like watching a play, really excellently acted.

Joshua Saxton nails it

The narrator was fantastic. The story was incredible, with a lot more depth and emotion than I could ever imagine going in.

I remember reading poppy as a teenager. The characters always so enjoyable as some are horrific. I wish they would turn the short stories into an audiobook. I loved Swamp Foetus. still have it along with all the other books, all well read and loved.

marvelous

The author is a poet. I don't know of any other human who can so completely spellbind and mezmerise using only words like this.
if you're looking at this book, you hopefully know what you are in for. If not - take a chance!

Also, the narrating is SUPERB! No annoying breathing, the voices are Perfect, everything is flawless.

All in all, I have no complaints, save that it didn't go on for longer. I'm on my third listen now, and still as enraptured.

An absolute artist!

An excellent reading of one of the most tragic and twisted romances you'll ever hear. If Horrific Romance is a genre then this is the absolute top of the list!
