Robert A. Heinlein has been hailed as one of the most forward-thinking science fiction writers of all time, and Expanded Universe (presented in two volumes) offers the perfect collection of his works to provide listeners with true insights into his uniquely creative mind.

Heinlein personally selected each story or essay for inclusion in this collection, which is ordered chronologically, starting with his first sale in 1939 of “Life-Line” to Astounding (for seventy dollars). This remarkable collection highlights the development of Heinlein’s writing style and his philosophy on life throughout his career.

More importantly, this collection is as close to an autobiography as anything Heinlein wrote during his life. Heinlein was an extremely private person who never wrote much about himself. In this exclusive collection, he offers forewords to most of his stories and essays (and an occasional afterword), giving listeners a rare glimpse into the inner mind of the master.

Expanded Universe is a must-have for any Heinlein enthusiast and any fan of science fiction.

Any additional comments?

My comments above may give the impression that I wasn't hooked by this collection, but I was. There were a couple of stories which bored me but the vast majority were excellent.

Some great stories, as expected

It is claimed that Heinlein was one of the ‘big three’ early science fiction writers along with Asimov and Arthur C Clarke. Although I have read at least one of his novels and a few short stories, I was generally unfamiliar with his work. The purchase of this book was intended to rectify that. I find that his plots are pedestrian, and I really do not like his writing style. Again and again he claims he writes only to pay the bills. There is an aggressive, power-obsessed, cynical, and unsympathetic edge to his prose. He is obsessed by nuclear weapons and takes the binary view that either some sort of world government should come about to end all wars and prevent their use, or everyone should take to the hills. The only defence against them is not to be there when they go off. Apparently, Asimov regarded him as a liberal…

There is a minor interest in some speculative fiction he wrote about atomic power in the early 1940s, before the mechanics of it were known. Also, he is quite ‘techie’, keen to display his engineering knowledge of how things work to add reality to his prose. Nevertheless, I did not enjoy this book at all in spite of the rather good narrator, and cannot recommend it.

Not for me
