Medical examiner Dr. Annabelle Schwartzman was not meant to be idle, which is why she's back at a murder scene even while reeling from recent chemotherapy treatments. Having undergone a double mastectomy, all she wants to do is dive back into her medical examiner job. It's a gruesome world, yet Schwartzman takes comfort in its science and precision.

But the crime she's dealing with brings her right back to the cancer ward: the victim is her own oncologist, dead from ingesting the very chemical used to fight her disease. Now, Schwartzman and homicide inspector Hal Harris must figure out why and stop the culprit before he can act again.

For Schwartzman, the case becomes even more personal. Her abusive ex, Spencer, who's in prison and seemingly out of the picture, is never far from Annabelle's mind. But to solve the mystery behind the death of the doctor who saved her life, she's got to put aside everything else.

Good tale and page turning stuff all the way through , however the ending is a cliff hanger. Plenty of excitement and twists in the story line but without a book 3 I'm left feeling non-plussed.

A little bag of tricks

This is the second book about Anabelle Schwartzman and having read the first is essential to understand what's going on. In some ways, this book follows on from the first.... Spencer McDonald is in custody but the case is far from a done deal. However, we also see much more of Schwartzman in her professional role as Medical Examiner investigating murders which are so unusual they have to be related, and yet have no apparent connection.

I found Schwartzman more relatable in this book than the first, although I still don't really feel like I know her. We see much more of her through the eyes of Inspector Hal Harris and I think this helps her seem more human.

At times I found I enjoyed this book immensely, at other times it was the stupidest book I've ever read. I think if you take the book as it's intended, it's quite good. If you question it too much, it is ridiculous. Spencer and his behaviour is beyond belief.... but I will just ignore that. Schwartzman is inconsistent as a character and I still don't know if I like her. But I just love some of the other characters. Ken Macey and Hal Harris are fantastic.

I will now be moving on to the third instalment! I got this as Audible narration was included on Kindle Unlimited. The narration is brilliant. Shannon McManus has a brilliant style, great pace and all the character voices are distinctive.

Schwartzman is back!
