Earth has survived an alien virus in this post-apocalyptic story. The alien virus was used to cleanse the planet before harvesting, and the surviving humans were given thousands of spaceships and robots as war reparations. The few survivors must adapt to survive. There is an unexplored Galaxy beyond their solar system. They must be wary of both their neighbors and an evil computer named Julius. Julius was an intelligent computer unleashed during the viral attack. He was programmed to deal with the two threats to his existence, SIMPOC, another intelligent computer programmed to help humans, and the remaining humans. Joan Herl and her husband Tom commandeer an alien ship to follow Julius. Julius has stolen an alien ship seeking resources so that he can deal with SIMPOC and the survivors. Julian knows that he must build up his arsenal so he can deal with the threats to his existence. He captures a very import human, but he doesn't know who he is!

Julius the First delivers a gripping audio experience, blending dystopian tension with royal intrigue. The narrator's dynamic tone amplifies Julius's rise amid viral devastation, making each twist visceral. While the pacing lags in world-building segments, the character depth—especially Julius's moral conflicts—shines. Sound effects enhance the apocalyptic atmosphere, though some dialogues feel rushed. A solid entry in the series, balancing action and political drama, leaving listeners eager for the next chapter. Perfect for fans of sci-fi sagas with a regal twist.

This fifth installment masterfully shifts the series' focus from viral apocalypse to the arduous birth of a civilization. Julius's journey is no longer about mere survival, but the immense weight of building a just society from the ashes. The novel thoughtfully explores the moral compromises and political machinations required for leadership. It poses a challenging question: can true humanity be rebuilt when its foundation is laid with pragmatic, often harsh, decisions? A compelling and philosophical chapter that adds profound depth to the post-apocalyptic genre, focusing on the architect of a new dawn.
