SHORTLISTED FOR THE IRISH BOOK AWARDS 2025

The real story behind Dunnes Stores, the most quintessentially Irish shop of all, and the family drama behind it

This is the story of the extraordinary family behind one of Ireland's most famous businesses, Dunnes Stores, over three generations and covering nearly 80 years of retailing but going back as far as the 19th century.
With drama worthy of the popular TV drama Succession, a real-life Irish family drama shows the children of a dominant founder argue as to who should run the supermarket empire after his death and take the money from it, and how they dealt or not, with addictions and ill health, including alcoholism.

This is the story of excess, success and failure. Business Political Science Politicians Politics & Activism Politics & Government Professionals & Academics Düşündürücü İlham verici

Loved listening to the story of one of Ireland’s favourite fashion & food stores. Dunnes stores holds a special place in my heart as I navigated my student years and beyond. Always good quality and value for money. Having grown up listening to Ben Dunnes rise and fall and Margaret as the formidable business woman behind Dunnes, Matt did a great job capturing the stories that dominated the news over the years. Matt narration is equally part of the Irish psyche & brilliantly relived the trials and tribulations. Highly recommend!!!

Highly recommend this book.

Gives a wonderfully comprehensive and impartial view of everything connected to Dunne’s. The corrupt nature of the political/ business nexus really well outlined and unflinchingly told.
