When Edgar Freemantle moves to the remote island of Duma Key to escape his past, he doesn't expect to find much there.

But Duma has been waiting for him, and something in the view from his window urges him to discover a talent he never knew he had.

Edgar Freemantle begins to paint. And as he paints, the island's secrets begin to stir. Secrets of children lost in the undertow, of a ghost ship riding the distant horizon - and a family's buried past reaching long hands into the present.

Duma Key has replaced The Stand as my favorite KING novel. I just LOVE Edgar and Wireman. Listen to John Slattery beautifully narrate this tale of woe. This book is simply delightful and tragic in equal measure. Really don't want to give any spoilers - but read this and weep and smile and be delighted and terrified in equal measure. Well written and developed characters, you really feel that you get to know so many, so well. I love the way that Wireman has 'special phrases' and how he and Edgar develop a close understanding and relationship. I find this so easy to listen to and have used it almost as a relaxation tool.
11/10 from me.

I enjoyed the print version of this book very much, but the audio version isn't as sinister, I'm afraid. I think it's because King wrote this one in short (VERY short, sometimes) chapters, which work in print but not in audio. That said, it's a good story and has kept me entertained over two very long car journeys.

Worth a listen

unfortunately, I found the narrator's voice so uninspiring that I found it difficult to concentrate on the story. very monotone, and all the characters sound alike. I think audiobook narration has moved on a lot from this.

Firstly, I absolutely love this book, its one of my all time favourite Stephen King books, I just love Edgar & Wireman, their conversations are fabulous & their stories are both heartbreaking & endearing.
Secondly, the narration is perfection, John Slattery brings the characters & story alive wonderfully.
I have both read & listened to this book several times & know I will continue to do so.

Perfection!

I mean he must be mustn't he? How else can he keep coming up with such highly original plots- and characterisations of which Dickens would be proud?
If you are new to King then read this, you won't be disapointed. If you are familiar with the great mans work you don't need me or this review, just dive in.
On the audio side John Slattery reads with a real feeling for the work.
Highly recommended.
