Joe Mulhall
Joe Mulhall knows what it’s like to stare fascism in the face. For a decade, often undercover at significant personal risk, he has investigated hate groups.
He infiltrated a US white supremacist militia, set up a fake Ku Klux Klan branch, has been on countless street marches with violent far-right groups across Europe, and got inside some of the most important ‘alt-right’ meetings ever held. Brazil, India and the US are still in thrall to authoritarian populism, and far-right views have become steadily normalised in mainstream politics. Mulhall’s dramatic experiences on the front line of anti-fascist activism, coupled with his academic research, clearly explain the roots of both elected and non-elected far-right movements across the globe. Above all, he concludes, the far right should not be dehumanised – they are normal people, but with dangerous beliefs that can be defeated.
‘Few, if any, are better placed to write a book of this breadth and scale than Joe Mulhall.’ Mark Townsend, Home Affairs editor of the Observer
‘Joe has had a unique view of the far right over the past decade as it transformed from a marginal subculture into one of the defining political currents of our time. He understands how these groups think and operate, and is perfectly placed to guide readers through this disturbing but vital story.’ Daniel Trilling, journalist and author of Lights In The Distance: Exile and Refuge at the Borders of Europe©2021 Joe Mulhall (P)2021 W. Some areas like Al Mujharoun appearance seem a bit under researched, they shut down my uni in freshers week in 1995 and were very active during the 90s in East London, well before the early 00s mentioned here. there were occasional narrator niggles duvh as when he pronounces Cote D'Ivoire phonetically but those aside it was an enjoyable read.
interesting read

For balance, after reading this book, consider "The War on the West" by Douglas Murray or "Radicalized - New Jihadists and the Threat to the West" by Peter Neumann. If the threat to the West is 'greater than ever' is it not surprising that there is a surge in popularity for organisations that might be more inclined to want to protect the West from 'radicalisation'?
Also, take a look at the Global Terrorism Index and note which countries are at the top. They also confirm that Islamic State remains the world's deadliest terror group with attacks in 21 countries (and the author here highlights a handful of attacks by individual white extremists across the globe over a 20 year period - awful attacks in every case, but hardly comparable to the atrocities committed by IS). Deaths by unknown Jihadists represent 32% of all terrorist deaths across the world.
Burkina Faso, Israel, Mali, Pakistan, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Nigeria, Myanmar, Niger, Iraq, Cameroon, Congo, India, Mozambique - these are the top 15 countries for terrorist attacks. Are these being committed by the Western far right? I think we should be more worried about a) the wars being waged in the world right now and the needless deaths they are responsible for b) the risk of an escalating position with countries like Iran, Russia, North Korea, USA etc likely to intervene c) the continued "migrant crisis" in the UK which appears to not be letting up. (Having a government whose first move to raise money is to take winter fuel payments from pensioners whilst seemingly continuing to haemorrhage [a conservative] £14bn per annum on illegal immigration and its on-costs is only going to fuel people's anger).
Read or listen to this book with an open but questioning mind. And one comical footnote - he's quick to criticised the "diabetes inducing candy in America" but then confesses to drinking alcohol and chain-smoking himself. Somewhat hypocritical but it gives you a sense of how blinkered the author appears to be.
A one-sided, narrow-minded viewpoint.
