I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as well as the rest of the trilogy, and I was surprised that there wasn't too much of a difference from the movie.
As a lover of sci-fi books, and movies, it was nice to read something that was slightly different from the norm. Comparable to Hunger Games, you can easily find the links between the "world" and factions described in the book with reality.
I felt an instant connection with Tris and the pull between that of the introvert vs the dare devil side of her.
Although there is the common theme of "teen in love" running through the story, the rest is real and gritty.
A really great read, and fantastic trilogy!

Brilliant!

Having just finished the Hunger Games series, I thought I'd give this a try. Despite the protagonists of the Hunger Games and Divergent being just one year apart in age (17 and 16 respectively), the way they are written seems to suggest a much larger age gap. Katniss Everdeen is a very mature 17, and Tris Prior is a very immature 16. Both are classed at young-adult dystopian fiction, so I'm aware they are written for younger audiences, but I just found that Hunger Games had more for the older listener too.
Emma Galvin's narration is good, although this is another area where Divergent can't match the Hunger Games series - Tatiana Maslany is excellent and has a much wider range of character voices.
Forgetting about this comparison for a second, Divergent is a decent book in its own right. The story is very engaging towards the end, although it ends rather abruptly - I don't tend to like endings that are so clearly a setup for a sequel. The book doesn't really conclude satisfactorily, but if you are engaged with the story you'll want to read the second one to find out what happens, so I suppose it does its job.
It's a little simplistically written, but I didn't mind that at the times when the story was rolling ahead at full steam. The author successfully creates the dystopian image of a divided nation, and as a reader you're pulled into Tris' world from the start, but she lost me in the middle where the edgy teen romance takes centre stage. It put me in mind of the Twilight series, with fear and obsession being the main components of the relationship. Again, I'm not a teenage girl, so maybe I just can't relate, but I thought Tris just needed to mellow out.
I wish some of the other factions had been explored in more detail - we get a lot about Dauntless and a decent amount about Abnegation, but Candor and Amity's descriptions basically boil down to one word each - "honest" and "kind" - a leap which you can already make for yourself from the factions' names! Perhaps more detail will be given in the sequels.
Maybe this sounds overly negative - after all, I did enjoy the book. But many other reviewers have highlighted its good points, so I'm just pointing out the not-so-good. The average review of 4.5 stars it a bit generous. I'd give it a solid 3.8, and I will probably pick up the second one when I feel like an easy listen, just to see what happens.

Not as good as the Hunger Games

I really enjoyed the film so this was a must read/listen for me. And whilst I loved it, I just felt it a little robotic at times. It needed just a little more gusto to really sell the story!
Definitely work a read though or a free audio book token!
