From the author of The Power, winner of the Women's Prize for Fiction

Ronit has left London and transformed her life. She has become a cigarette-smoking, wise-cracking, New York career woman, who is in love with a married man.

But when Ronit's father dies she is called back into the very different world of her childhood, a world she thought she had left far behind. The orthodox Jewish suburb of Hendon, north London is outraged by Ronit and her provocative ways. But Ronit is shocked too by the confrontation with her past. And when she meets up with her childhood girlfriend Esti, she is forced to think again about what she has left behind.

Loved the story and really enjoyed the Torah teachings at the start of each chapter. Sadly the performance let it down. The two ladies had a very similar tone which took a while to work out who.

The pronunciation of the Hebrew was simply painfully. Even the main character’s name was pronounced incorrectly. It would have been better if a Jewish people had read it.

Great story, painfully translated

An excellent novel and superb narration. I don't know if it would appeal to a non Jewish reader, with so many references to Jewish law and lifestyle. However the theme of forbidden love, regret and family fracture are universal. A great listen.
