After thirty years at St Oswald's Grammar in North Yorkshire, Latin master Roy Straitley has seen all kinds of boys come and go - the clowns, the rebels, the underdogs, and those he calls his Brodie boys. But every so often there's a boy who doesn't fit the mould. A troublemaker. A boy capable of twisting everything around him. A boy with hidden shadows inside.

With insolvency and academic failure looming, a new broom has arrived at the venerable school, bringing Powerpoint, sharp suits and even sixth form girls to the dusty corridors. But while Straitley does his sardonic best to resist this march to the future, a shadow from his past is stirring. A boy who even twenty years on haunts his teacher's dreams. A boy capable of bad things.

A magnificently plotted and twisty journey to the heart of a 24-year-old crime...darkly humorous...constantly wrongfoots and misdirects...up to a satisfyingly eccentric conclusion.
Slowly, Harris reveals tiny clues, withholding full explanations until the startling denouement. Classy writing, sensitive and moving.
Harris pulls off an impeccable thriller denouement...consistently entertaining. (John Dugdale)
It's Goodbye, Mr Chips meets The Bad Seed. Joanne Harris' latest has a killer elevator pitch and, what's more, it delivers on its intriguing premise...a rich, dramatic tale that builds to a surprising conclusion.
A masterpiece of misdirection. (Val McDermid)
Harris magnificently manages every minute thread of the story, and even makes us laugh along the way . . . exquisitely sinister. . . Part black comedy, part thriller, and totally enjoyable.
Tackles big subjects, including teacher-pupil romances, sexual assault, homophobia and murder. You'll love it if...you enjoyed The Girl on the Train so crave another intelligent thriller.
Deftly orchestrated and beautifully written tale of abuse, loyalty and regret.
Her real metier is psychological suspense, and her accomplished new book, Different Class, is a prime example of her skills in this area . . . Crime novel or literary novel? Categories really don’t matter; readers will find themselves comprehensively gripped.
A long way from Chocolat, Joanne Harris's reinvention as a writer of psychological thrillers continues apace...delivers it beautifully.

What did you like most about Different Class?

Everything that I loved about the first. Joanne Harris has a great ability to keep her characters engaging and the storyline flows with complete ease.

What other book might you compare Different Class to, and why?

I cannot compare really, as the title says a Different Class. Unlike many other crime novels, this one did not suddenly jump to an unbelievable conclusion to wrap it up. Well done Ms Harris

Have you listened to any of Steven Pacey and Ewan Goddard ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I adore Steven Pacey's narrations and will read anything by him, at first I was a bit concerned about Ewan Goddard's but he actually did a really good job, and I thought the combination of them both worked well.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, because that would be a spoiler. Audible think of a better question than this

I was moved when it finished as I wanted to listen to more

Any additional comments?

Love love love. Brilliantly written, superb narration, great story. I do hope we get to hear from the Latin Master again............and soon

The second book as brilliant as the first...

The writing of this novel was like peeling an onion, it came in layer after layer of smouldering darkness.

Steven Pacey was excellent but I really did not enjoy the voice of Ewan Goddard, his voice was nasally with little intonation.

I believe this book is part of a trilogy, this one heing the middle one. That said, I listened to it without knowing the characters but this did not spoil the enjoyment.

Layered darkness

Would you listen to Different Class again? Why?

If this had been a paper book instead of an audiobook, I would have flicked back to check - "Did he really say that?"...."But I thought....". Joanne Harris has set traps for the reader. Things are never quite what they seem. Details that seemed trivial in early chapters, assume a different proportions as the story progresses. I would be happy to hear the whole book again if only to understand the plot better.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Different Class?

It would give away the plot to say too much but this is not just a 'whodunnit' but also 'a who was it done to?' There is a moment when the character of one of the two narrators is revealed as being somewhat different to that which we have taken for granted. A masterstroke!

What about Steven Pacey and Ewan Goddard ’s performance did you like?

It is beautifully read. Steven Pacey has all the gravitas needed for his role. We may not agree with his rather conservative views but we know that we can trust him. Ewan Goddard's character is quite the opposite = a nasty piece of work - but convincing nonetheless.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

At least until overcome by the need to sleep but I did my absolute best!

Any additional comments?

A better class of read! It's the third book in a trilogy and, although each book is complete in itself, is best read in order.

A better class of book

Great story. As always with Joanne Harris, it's never quite what you're expecting. Which makes for a good read. Slightly dark which I found a little uncomfortable.

Very Interesting read
