Monday 10th June, end of a hot day. The city had started drinking at lunchtime and by three or four p.m. crime seemed the only appropriate response to the beauty of the afternoon.... At quarter to five he felt his contribution to law and order had been made. He parked off the high street, sunk two shots of pure grain vodka into iced Nicaraguan espresso and put his seat back. In an hour he'd be off duty, and in a couple more he'd be on a date with an art student he'd recently arrested for drugs possession.

London is steaming under a summer of filthy heat and sudden storms - and Detective Nick Belsey, of Hampstead CID, is trying to stay out of trouble.

But then somebody sets him a riddle. How does a man walk into a dead-end alley and never come out?

And then reappear - to snatch a girl, to dump a body beneath a London skyscraper, to send Belsey a package of human hair?

The answer lies underground, where the secrets degenerating beneath the city's sickly glitter are about to see the light of day.

Eleştirmen yorumları

"Makes the capital as eerie as Le Carré's Berlin." (Evening Standard)

"Relentless...explosive." (Mail on Sunday)

"The coolest cop you'll have come across in ages. London through his eyes is as atmospheric as a drawing by Gustave Doré.... This demands to be read before the television adaptation." (Kate Saunders)

First two in the series of four have been outstanding!! About to start number three. Nick Belsey is a legend! Thank you Oliver for these wonderful books and to Toby for simply world class narration

Simply Brilliant

the characters and the details are great. A bit too much happens and some seriously stupid decisions made. All a bit unlikely. . not as good as the first book but well worth a read. the reader is brilliant.

Yeah but

Brilliantly written. Massively detailed research by author Oliver Harris. You need to concentrate as the story is complex at times. Narration is excellent. Toby Longworth has a very wide range of voices and accents - all of which are convincing, even the female ones. The main character's voice is utterly convincing. This is not light listening.. the detail is important and needs to be understood in order to enjoy the story to the maximum. On to the third book now!

Brilliant story - complex..

Sounded exciting so looked forward to listening.
Narrator's voice was not good, and as for the story, well, I think it could make a great movie as it's about long forgotten government tunnels built for the elite VIP's among us mere porpors but as for an audi book. Don't bother.

Yawn
