From the bestselling author of Death and Croissants comes a murder mystery perfect for fans of Richard Osman, Julia Chapman, or MC Beaton

On the surface, Richard Ainsworth has life where he wants it. Middle-aged navel gazing and Olympic levels of procrastination are exactly what rural life in France should be about.

Then crisis hits his posh B&B when redoubtable housekeeper, Madame Tablier, is accused of murder. Even more surprisingly, it's the murder of a former fiancé, turned brother-in-law. None of which the stubborn old woman denies.

Valérie d'Orçay is having none of it and their investigation leads them to a strange tourist garden village, where backbiting, recriminations and even former colleagues provide a deadly scenario more tangled than knotweed.

Love this writing. Constantly funny and beautifully crafted characters. Had a lot of trouble with the many French names and as a reader/listener you have to stay alert at all times to keep up with the many characters and plot twists. There are two characters I would prefer he left out as their exploits are not something I enjoy reading about. Thankfully they only appeared for a short while in this book and their exploits were not described in detail. Heaven. Therefore making this my favourite book. However, the way Ian weaves the complexities of characters together whilst presenting constant laughs is a gift to us all.

Wit and Brilliant Characters

I read the first book by accident really as it was on a book shelf at a holiday cottage I was staying in and I decided to give it a go. I was hooked. Then I returned and was back to audible. Initially I downloaded the second book but wasn’t taken by the narration but I persevered and so glad I did. Really charming and good company on long journeys. When will book 5 be out on audible ?!

A cracking good series really worth a listen

Another cracking story with lots of wry humour, pretty realistic characters, a complex new mystery and a rich cast of oddballs, and Richard is developing well as a detective. And a surprise ending which might be a cliff-hanger...

Delightful continuation of the series

The latest in the series and probably the best. The convoluted plot was a pleasure to untangle and the characters, as ever, a joy.

Great fun!

Thank you Ian for making me smile! Wonderful tale...I will have to listen again to make sure I revisit the clues. For those who have not read Ian's initial autobiography about his move to France I recommend you read the book. It will make you understand some of the characters he invents in his fiction work. It will make you smile even more .
