Thomas Mann's classic tale of mortality, loneliness and loss is here presented for the first time as an immersive audio-book, bringing to life the decaying, plague-ridden city of Venice-the story's unforgettable setting-in a uniquely evocative way.

Mann's hero, the ageing writer Gustav Aschenbach, returns to the city to escape the burden of a dull, respectable past. But when he finds himself suddenly enchanted by a beautiful child on Venice's Lido beach, hidden demons begin to take control of his hitherto cloistered life.

Luchino Visconti's Oscar-winning film made this story famous back in the 1970's. This audio-book version seeks to create a brand-new cinematic landscape through its orchestration of audio effects, while remaining true to Mann's original storytelling voice.

Read unabridged by Steve Gough, whose previous immersive audio-books on Audible have won numerous five-star ratings.

Steve Gough's brilliantly planned and created recording, enfolds the story of Aschenbach's crumbling end in a totally believable blanket of sounds, musical, natural and social. For me, Gough's sensitive rendering, together with this " immersion" changed Mann's wonderfully expressive language into more of a personal experience - of pre world war Italy, travel, celebrity, society, emotional expression and the borders of life. Superb.
