The first prequel in Larry McMurtry’s beloved Lonesome Dove series features the early adventures of Texas Rangers Augustus McCrae and Woodrow F. Call, two of the most memorable heroes in contemporary fiction.

As young Texas Rangers, Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call ("Gus" and "Call" for short) have much to learn about survival in a land fraught with perils: not only the blazing heat and raging tornadoes, roiling rivers and merciless Indians, but also the deadly whims of soldiers. On their first expeditions—led by incompetent officers and accompanied by the robust, dauntless whore known as the Great Western—they will face death at the hands of the cunning Comanche war chief Buffalo Hump and the silent Apache Gomez. They will be astonished by the Mexican army. And Gus will meet the love of his life.©2000 Larry McMurtry; (P)2000 Simon & Schuster Genre Fiction Historical Fiction Kurgu Literary Fiction Latin Amerika Meksika Düşündürücü Macera

Wow! A frontier story as expansive and untamed as the country it describes. Totally un p c yet somehow I ( a well intentioned liberal) found myself caring about the venal, violent, native land annexing main characters. Phew!

Not for the feint hearted

A well-narrated tale of adventure and misadventure in the Comancheria of 19th century North America. It does not attain the heights or pathos of Lonesome Dove, but it is highly enjoyable nonetheless. I do wonder, though, if McMurtry enjoys his descriptions of Comanche torture just a bit too much.

A fine western adventure
