A century after it first appeared, Crime and Punishment remains one of the most gripping psychological thrillers. A poverty-stricken young man, seeing his family making sacrifices for him, is faced with an opportunity to solve his financial problems with one simple but horrifying act: the murder of a pawnbroker. She is, he feels, just a parasite on society. But does the end justify the means? Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov makes his decision and then has to live with it. Dostoyevsky, in masterly fashion, contrasts the comedy and tragedy of life in St. Petersburg with the anguish and turmoil of Raskolnikov's inner life.

Halfway through I had to find a synopsis to understand where the story was going. Once that was clear, I could relax and enjoy the precise descriptions and tantalising conversations. Each character consistently recognisable and beautifully voiced .

10 wondrous words for one.

The storytelling was incredibly effective in concealing the underlying philosophical arguments of Dostoyevsky so as to prevent them becoming obvious and therefore making the story itself superfluous. Gregory presented the book very well, pronouncing the difficult names simply and using voices which distinguished each character. Excellent book, and a great classic.

Inspirational and riveting argument against Nihilism

Here Dosteyevsky discusses the morality of murder through his protagonist Raskolnikov. While I found the writing style engaging and the philosophy interesting, I felt the plot to meander a lot at times. Overall I thought it was worth a listen but that the same effect could have been achieved in two thirds the time.

Interesting topic but long-winded

this isn't a book for those new to audiobooks or Russian novels. it took nearly 4 hours to build momentum and even after it felt like it was going around in circles.

saying that, it's a brilliant novel from characters to pacing. highly recommended
