Paris, 1585: Giordano Bruno has come to Paris, a city on the edge of catastrophe. Alone and near destitute, Bruno turns to old friend and zealous preacher, Paul Lefevre. But when the priest is murdered, Bruno is pulled into a dangerous world. If Bruno can’t uncover the truth, not only is the future of the de Valois monarchy threatened – but his own life will be the forfeit.©2016 Stephanie Merritt (P)2016 W.F. I must admit that I was devastated on hearing the first few sentences of this book. The dark brown voice provided by Laurence Kennedy in the previous novels had made Bruno such a familiar figure to me that I felt I had lost a friend. A little research quickly informed me that Laurence died in 2018, and I was much saddened at the passing of someone who brought these characters to life in such an energetic and expert manner.
It took me a while to get used to the new Bruno, and the new characters in the unfamiliar french royal court and the new setting of Paris. I was not visualising or inhabiting the story as before. However things improved as the story developed and I began to get used to a new, younger Bruno. In fact, at times, this seemed to fit better with his episodes of rash behaviour and his impulsiveness. I look forward to Book 6.

not to kean on this narrator preferred the previous one. Accents not as good I'd prefer no accent if they can't be done properly

The book is set in Paris, during the year, 1585.

After four other novels, I had come to love Giordano Bruno, but the reader has changed. At first I found this difficult, but after that, I loved it!

Bruno is alone & he requests a favour from an old friend, Paul Lefevre, who is murdered!

Bruno once again becomes involved with solving the murder, this time saving his own life & that of his friend the King.

I thought this book better than Book 4, which I hadn’t liked as much as Books 1-3.

I bought this as a daily deal not sure if I would like it but I have to say it captured my ears and carried me along to the point of stopping what I was doing to listen. Good pace great story great performance! I certainly won't be returning it for credit and will listen to it again

A damn good listen

I love these books and look forward to the next one. What spoilt this book for me was the change in narrator. After five books you get a picture of Bruno and how he sounds but in theConspiracy it isn’t the same narrator so it didn’t have the same impact. For the next book or books could we please have the original narrator and bring Bruno to life as I had come to know him. Loved the descriptions of London and Paris beautifully written and anyone who enjoys a crime solver will enjoy Bruno .The books grow on you .
