Joe Arden and Narrator Hall of Fame inductee Andi Arndt deliver a perfectly layered performance in Cake, a romance about finding love and redemption in unexpected places.

Quiet and aloof rock star Jake McKallister and outspoken, vivacious college student Casey Caldwell are polar opposites: Casey is bubbly and talkative; Jake is reclusive. Casey enjoyed a picturesque childhood; Jake’s childhood could only be described as a well-publicized nightmare. Jake’s life revolves around music, and Casey can’t carry a tune.

Music saved Jake, yet he lacks the outgoing personality expected of a famous performer. After surviving an unspeakable crime as a young teen, he becomes a guarded workaholic who desperately attempts to forget the past. Career success comes easily for Jake, but he struggles to make personal connections.

Despite their differences, Casey’s light harmonizes with Jake’s darkness, a balance embodied in the unexpectedly warm and humorous dual performance. Can the sweetness of true love overcome Jake’s tragic past?

This is the first book in the Cake series, a collection of contemporary romance novels focusing on the lives of a famous family.

Great romance novel with depth have listened to it twice now. My guilty pleasure each year.

I love the entire Cake series, the writing is fun and the characters likeable throughout. the subject matter in each book is deep and covers all kinds of trauma and personal struggles, all the while, growing the relationships and great storylines.
I'd say my only gripe in the Audible version is Joe Arden as Jake. and don't get me wrong Joe is a master of the smouldering voice, but he sounds too old to be Jake in my opinion. Otherwise a brilliant book through and through.

Quite a lot more than just a romance. Jake’s traumatic back story adds a whole different edge to the story. The story is slow and so detailed it feels like it’s in real time in places. I really liked this. I’ll definitely re listen. My only complaint was that the ending felt abrupt - but I see there is a sequel!

Surprising good

I expected the usual chicklit offering but this book had a lot more depth with lots of drama. I would prefer not to have the explicit sex description and not so much swearing but I'm probably in the minority there. I even had tears in my eyes at times and I'm usually not touched by emotion when reading fiction. An excellent book. Thanks very much.
