Cold Case detective Cassidy Miller is no stranger to buried things—bodies, secrets, and memories she'd rather forget. Life with her fiancée, the brilliant but guarded defense attorney Julia Desjardin, is the closest thing she's felt to peace. But as Julia begins the emotional process of fertility treatments, Cassidy finds herself caught between wanting a future and fearing she doesn't deserve one.

When hidden graves are unearthed at a long-abandoned public housing site, Cassidy is pulled into a case fraught with redlining, corruption, and systemic injustice. As the investigation deepens, so does the scrutiny—from the media, from city officials, and from an ex-girlfriend who's back in town and crossing every boundary.

Caught between a past she's tried to forget and a future she's unsure she can have, Cassidy must confront hard truths. Because not everything buried stays that way. And the future she wants won't wait forever.

I absolutely loved Buried Promises. This series just keeps getting better, and this installment hit me right in the heart.

Eliza Lentzski has created characters that feel so real it almost hurts. The emotional depth, the tension, and the slow unraveling of relationships had me completely hooked from start to finish. I didn’t just listen — I felt every moment.

And Lori Prince… wow. Her narration elevates the entire experience. She captures every nuance, every hesitation, every emotional shift so perfectly that it feels like you’re inside the characters’ heads. The chemistry, the vulnerability, the intensity — all of it comes through so clearly.

If you’ve been following the “Don’t Call Me Hero” series, this is an absolute must-listen. And if you haven’t started yet, you’re missing out on something really special!!!!

LOVE this series!!!!

I love this brilliant series of audiobooks from Eliza Lentzski. This novel includes a very interesting and important history lesson. It highlights behaviour which is not limited to Minneapolis or the US; I am in the UK and we have our version of it too. It is something we should all be aware of because the attitudes behind it carry on, negativity impacting our world today. EL is such an interesting and intelligent writer - I really, really hope she writes more in this series and there is another coming soon. The narrator is great too - MORE PLEASE!!!

Excellent addition to the Don't Call Me Hero Series

The relationship between Julia and Cassidy on the cusp of forever is delicately told. The struggles of post service life are a reminder that participants carry a huge burden with very little or no assistance.

I wonder about Monica and wish that sub plot had a resolution and hopefully a good one.

Hardest of all is the cold case theme of lost girls and there is no resolution of what clearly is murder. That sorrow echoes down the years

The past catches up with the future
