The Eightfold Path is the most widely known formulation of the Buddha's teaching. It is ancient, reaching back to the Buddha's very first discourse, and it is highly venerated as a unique treasury of wisdom and practical guidance. The teaching of the Eightfold Path challenges us to grasp the implications of that vision, and asks us to transform ourselves in its light. Like the teaching itself, this work covers every aspect of life.

"'Cease to be evil, learn to do good, purify the heart.' Sounds simple, doesn't it? Yet the Buddhist path to enlightenment, as this fascinating work informs us, is fraught with the distractions of 'mundane conditioned existence.' Sangharakshita spent 20 years in India before returning to Britain to found the Western Buddhist Order, its mission to make the creed accessible to his compatriots. So while this text, read with calm authority by a member of the order, is a scholarly distillation of many strands of teaching, it is also probably the best 'life coaching' manual you'll ever read, the key to living with clarity and awareness. Only follow the path, advised the Buddha, and you will be free." ( The Sunday Times)

A no-fluff guide to the 8-fold path, a little dry and I lost focus in parts, but it's not trying to be an entertainment book, it's more like a text book, setting out the path in a clear way so even laymen like me can follow it. Recommended.

Does what it says on the tin

So many books about buddhism seem to be in the live lecture format. Part of the reason that I chose this was that it is not in this format.

This is a proper book. It is read at a sensible pace, free of extended pauses.

Most importantly this book refers to aspects of teaching from various schools of Buddhism. There is content here and plenty of it.

The writing is skillful, precise, and economical.

I will definitely listen to these five hours again. What better reccomendation is there than that?

Brilliant.

Informative, and well-informed - well worth it.

His imperious tone, and the unfalsifiable stuff about psychological evolution, both put me off. Overall good and worthwhile however. Very practical and accessible, which is important. At times funny.

Good but flawed

A good mix of thorough knowledge and basic explanation, technical terms and basic understanding. It has a well reasoned structure but as an audio book, sometimes difficult to grasp all the Sanskrit content.

An informative insight
