While Brother Cadfael has bent Abbey rules, he has never broken his monastic vows—until now. Word has come to Shrewsbury of a treacherous act that has left 30 of Empress Maud's knights imprisoned during England's dynastic war between two grandchildren of William the Conqueror. All have been ransomed except Cadfael's secret son, Olivier. Conceived in Cadfael's soldiering youth and unaware of his father's identity, Olivier will die if he is not freed. Cadfael is determined to find him but must leave the monastery without his abbot's blessing.

A gentle story despite it containing a murder and an attack in a castle. It's much more about family connections and honour. Parent and grown child.

some books you can read again and again

Cadfaels shows his wonderful rounded deep character qualities in this moving tale of heroism. Age doesn't matter. What an encouragement!

What could be better than Derek Jacobi reading about the character he brought to life, I just couldn’t stop listening.

A gem to listen to

I really love the Cadfael stories and this is one of my favourites. Shame it isn’t unabridged but beautiful done by Sir Derek Jacobi, my one and only Cadfael.

A great story

First off it's a brilliant book! The plot is incredibly interesting, all the more because it's about a medieval monk with a past. The voice done by Derek Jacobi is excellent. He narrates it wonderfully and having the man who played Cadfael in the tv adaptation read him in the book gives it that extra credibility.

Brilliant!
