The multi-million copy number one bestseller
One of The Sunday Times's top 100 bestselling books of the past 50 years

Welcome to Bridget's first diary: mercilessly funny, endlessly touching and utterly addictive.

A dazzlingly urban satire on modern relationships?
An ironic, tragic insight into the demise of the nuclear family?
Or the confused ramblings of a pissed thirty-something?

As Bridget documents her struggles through the social minefield of her thirties and tries to weigh up the eternal question (Daniel Cleaver or Mark Darcy?), she turns for support to four indispensable friends: Shazzer, Jude, Tom and a bottle of chardonnay.

Helen Fielding's first Bridget Jones novel, Bridget Jones's Diary, sparked a phenomenon that has seen four books, newspaper columns and the smash-hit film series Bridget Jones's Diary, The Edge of Reason, Bridget Jones's Baby and Mad About the Boy.

Bridget Jones's Diary was featured in 'The 100 bestselling books of the past 50 years' published by The Sunday Times on 18/08/2024

If you could sum up Bridget Jones's Diary in three words, what would they be?

Very amusing entertainment

Would you be willing to try another book from Helen Fielding? Why or why not?

Yes. I really enjoyed listening to it

Have you listened to any of Imogen Church’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't. But I will certainly start looking for more of her performed readings. She's amazing

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud several time, and smirked quite a lot

Any additional comments?

I had watched the movie so pretty much knew what was going to happen, but I still enjoyed listening to it very much, thanks to the several situations the heroine got herself into and to the amazing performance of Imogen Church.

Bridget Jones's Diary is an entertaining, often funny story. Coupled with Imogen Church's narration, the audiobook feels like you are experiencing the frustrations of being a single woman in the late 90s with a sharp and witty outlook on the pressures this comes with from people in Bridget's immediate circle.
However, I feel like this book gives in to stereotypes like Bridget's constant recordings of her weight and calorie intake and calorie intake, the obsessive need of having a boyfriend and the unhealthy relationship with eating chocolate to deal with emotions which lets it down quite a bit.
Despite its flaws, I felt entertained enough to want to continue listening/reading the Bridget Jones series and a need to rewatch the film. I would say that Bridget Jones's Diary is a must-read for fans of comedic chick-lit but not so much for those who are wanting something a bit more feminist.

Rather entertaining

Loved this! The narrator was perfect. I previewed another version and much preferred Imogen Church. If you loved the film and are searching for more Bridget I would definitely recommend it. I read some negative reviews on audible before buying written by men and “middle aged” readers (their words not mine!) and can admittedly understand why for such an audience she might be hard to relate to at times. I do think the film improved on the story and likeability of some characters but overall as a woman in my late 20s I found her hilariously relatable. Her daily struggles are as relevant today as 20 years ago (minus the video tape references!). It’s Bridget Jones! Of course she’s silly and often ridiculous but I found her charming and entertaining to the end. Looking forward to the next!

Perfect January read
