On the Sunday of his 18th birthday, in 1975, Colin takes a walk on Box Hill, a biker hang-out. There he accidentally trips over Ray, a biker napping under a tree - and that’s where it all starts.

This transgressive, darkly affecting love story between men, winner of the 2019 Fitzcarraldo Editions Novel Prize, is a stunning novel of desire and domination by one of Britain’s most accomplished writers.

Eleştirmen yorumları

"Adam Mars-Jones has never needed to write at great length to convince readers of his talent. Mars-Jones’ latest work is a sliver of a novel that provides ample evidence of his prowess. Box Hill is not a novel for the prudish, but it is a masterclass in authorial control. Despite its diminutive length, it is rich with detail and complexity, and has plenty to demonstrate Mars-Jones’ well-deserved place on any list of our best." (Alex Nurnberg, Sunday Times)

"The biggest small book of the year." (Guardian)

One of the few times where the film is better than the book. But in all honesty, the film is a very different story to the book. It’s very much a story of two halves, but neither is particularly satisfying. Just as you are engaging with the narrative the story jumps years ahead leaving many questions unanswered.

Not the film.

Watching the movie a few days before listening to the book. The book connected bits I couldnt connect in the film. The book is alot more sadder then the movie but keeps the same feeling. I wish there were some more of the scenes from the book in the movie. But my honest review. The book 10/10 The movie 10/10

The film based on this book “Pillion”, is an excellent piece of work and well worth it. Box Hill is so much better and satisfying, it also helps to fill in a few unanswered questions from the film, giving the story breathing space. The author has a long and rich bibliography, which I would love to hear on audiobook. At time of writing, Box Hill remains the only audiobook by this author.

So much better than the film

was not what I expected, Very Sad but realistic in it's delivery. Highly enjoyable. Will be interesting how this transfers to screenplay and film

I wanted to hear the book as the film seemed to miss a number critical items. Why did Ray change his mind about dinner? What was the motivation behind the kiss and what came after? I figured the book would either be different or be better at filling in ‘state of mind’.

The answer is “different”, significantly.
So long as you can get past the initial mention of rape, the rest of the story plays better.

Significantly different to the film, more complete
