Grace Livingston Hill
She returns from college expecting a proposal from her childhood sweetheart. Instead, she finds a man transformed by cold, worldly ambition. He no longer sees her as a partner, but as a "project" to be molded for his prestigious city parish. When he callously replaces her at her own birthday dinner with the manipulative city girl, she realizes her worth. Encouraged by her family, she flees the heartbreak for a season of travel in Europe.
While she finds healing and a deeper, more resilient faith under the mentorship of a profound Scottish preacher. Life at home unravels for him. Driven by vanity, professional and family life crumbles under the weight of his deceit. She returns as a woman of "grave, sweet maturity," no longer seeking the approval of the man who discarded her. But he wants her back at all cost! The story concludes with powerful romantic vindication, but with whom? A wonderful Christian Romance.
