When philandering Sir Giles Lynchwood decides it's time to wriggle free of his monumentally unattractive wife, Lady Maud, he knows divorce is out of the question. He can't leave her and keep her cash; a reversionary clause on her ancestral home, Handyman Hall, has taken care of that. Lady Maud, for her own special reasons, is also dying to see the back of Sir Giles. Sir Giles dreams of motorways ploughing through the front door of Handyman Hall, of compulsory purchase orders, of loot and no wife. Lady Maud bellows. Blott the gardener watches from his inner sanctum, the greenhouse, and listens...and waits.©1985 Tom Sharpe (P)2014 Audible, Inc. I remember the TV series of his book with fond memories as a child so when I saw it on offer here with David Suchet (Blott in the TV show) narrating I got it immediately.
Listening to it I was not disappointed David gives a wonderful performance and Brings the characters alive. The masterful plot from Sharpe came flooding back to me.
Give it a listen and enjoy.

Loved the TV series as a child.

David Suchet tells the story of a traditional English community as it reacts to a proposed new motorway and the possible routes. A surprise hero helps them to win their victory.

Hilarious Comedy of Characters

It's many years since I first read the Tom Sharpe collection so I wanted to have them read to me. What a treat! Brought to amazing life by David Suchet and although it seems quite dated now, a very rewarding lockdown experience. 8/10

As sharpe as ever

How can a story that revolves around the construction of a motorway be so good. Excentric character, fantastic plot twists and incredibly narration - that's how.

So much fun
