'A cracking read' – Susan Calman

'Stuart MacBride is an automatic must-read for me . . . always fast, hard, authentic – and different' – Lee Child, author of the Jack Reacher series

Perfect for fans of Ian Rankin and Val McDermid, Blood, Rust and Steel is darkly funny and gripping Scottish crime at its very best.

All good things must come to an end . . .

Acting Detective Inspector Roberta Steel has never been shy, but she’s finally retiring. After thirty years of policing Aberdeen’s underbelly, she’s all set for her twilight years to feature gardening gloves, afternoon tea, crossword puzzles, and shouting at the telly.

So, when a body turns up in a wheelie bin, it looks like an excellent way to round off her career and go out with a bang. But the Northeast of Scotland isn’t finished with her yet:

There’s a violent protest to stop; far-right populist politicians, and sketchy government spooks; a by-election; drugs, dogs, and baby-doll nighties; and a desperate ex-colleague, begging her for help.

With only her Queen Street Irregulars for backup, and the top brass desperate to get shot of her, these final few weeks might just be the death of her . . .

Really enjoyed this one a stunning first solo outing for Roberta Steel who I loathed in the Logan books but found myself appreciating here . Hopefully there will be further outings for the retired detective

Brilliant

Story, characters & performance great.
The sound effects and singing don’t transfer from page to audio, nerve gratingly annoying .

I'm going to bite the bullet and address the issue that others have raised. we all LOVE the Steel who has been effectively co-created by Logan narrator Steve Worsley, but I feel like I need to balance this with some nuance. In the Logan series, Steel is the comedy sidekick: she is exaggerated, grotesque and hilarious. I'm not sure this would work for Steel as the central character. Here, Tufty has taken the made responsibility for the comedy sidekick role as Steel has to carry the plot. So, the actual writing of Steel also appears to be different - not just the narration. much as I absolutely love Sidekick Steel, solo Steel is more believable and more rounded. you can actually understand how she got to DI, and how the sainted Susan deals with her
For what it's worth, once I'd got used to the differences, I really enjoyed this book. Have an open mind and give it a whirl.

excellent story as usual

Bottom line is I felt that a female voice didn’t work. I constantly felt that it just wasn’t right somehow. I think it was primarily for two reasons: 1. I guess I was just expecting the same sort of voice I’d heard in the past stories 2. I felt it made Tufty sound just too silly - Story was fine except I did miss Logan McCray - think perhaps the series is running out of appeal for me - that said it still displayed some sharp wit and I did laugh out loud on at least two occasions

I’m a fan normally…..
