The Coldfire trilogy tells a story of discovery and battle against evil on a planet where a force of nature exists that is capable of reshaping the world in response to psychic stimulus. This terrifying force, much like magic, has the power to prey upon the human mind, drawing forth a person's worst nightmare images or most treasured dreams, and indiscriminately giving them life.

This is the story of two men: one, a warrior priest ready to sacrifice anything and everything for the cause of humanity's progress; the other, a sorcerer who has survived for countless centuries by a total submission to evil. They are absolute enemies who must unite to conquer an evil greater than anything their world has ever known.

For the positive. There are elements in the world building, specific scenes and characters that are interesting. The narrator is making a fantastic job of distinquiching each character voice and it improves the experiance. With that said, there is far to many major things that drag down the score for me. The overarching plot make little sense and feel to forced. Plot events that has week or manifactured setup. The prose has random sexual descriptions in very questionable places. Not inapproprient, more like: what does walking into a cave feel like entering a woman for the first time? Similar descriptions are sprinkled all over the story. And its a strange use of sublime proses that just took me out of the story each time it happend.
Unless you have an interest in writing and want to case to analys the craft (as i have) its a hard to recommend.

Great narrator, weak story

When I was in highschool i read this book and remembered it fondly. I loved it at the time. now almost 18 years later, im glad to say its just as good as i remember. The reading perfomance is one of the best I've heard as well. i never read the rest of the series and now I'm looking forward to it.

As good as i remember.

Set on an Earth like planet where natural forces dubbed fae works like magic and makes the world fundamentally different from Earth, a group of friends (colleagues, lovers) travel across an unfamiliar continent seeking the memories and knowledge stolen from one of them.

Unusual alliances are made, new insights are gained - and an epic battle is fought.

The characters are fascinating and intriguing. The complex relationship between Damien Vryce and Gerald Tarrant holds your attention in every scene.

Wonderfully read!
