A searing debut set in a modern India simmering with the tension of growing religious intolerance

Teetapur, an unassuming village just a few hours outside of bustling Delhi, is famous for nothing—until one of its children, eight-year-old Munia, is found dead, hanging from the branch of a Jamun tree.

In the largely Hindu village, suspicion quickly falls on an itinerant Muslim man, Mansoor. Suspicion ignites like wildfire, fueled by religious tensions that simmer beneath the surface.

The responsibility of uncovering the elusive truth—and prevent the lynching of the prime suspect—now rests on the weary shoulders of Sub-Inspector Ombir Singh. With only one other officer beneath him, and just a single working revolver between them, can he bring justice to a grieving father and an angry village—or will Teetapur demand vengeance instead?

Offering listeners a gripping mystery and a sweeping state-of-the-nation saga, Black River stands as a searing critique of modern India, weaving an intricate narrative that captures the essence of a nation grappling with its own complexities and contradictions.

Although I guessed the protagonist midway through, it did not detract from this towering story of love, loss and humanity. It paints both a grim picture of modern day rural India but also highlights the power of love and kindness. Absolutely beautiful book

Gripping moving thriller

This is such an achievement as a novel, though difficult and upsetting at times because of the subject matter. The corruption and weakness of those in huge authority is explored but also the kindness and decency of others.

However the narration is absolutely dreadful; colourless, characterless, passionless. At one point it occurred to me that it sounded like a child learning to read, uncertain of what word was coming next. As a listener I was insulted because I’m quite sure the narrator could read well enough but had done no preparation whatsoever.

So I cannot recommend this audiobook. Read the novel instead!

Wonderful Novel, but the narration.,,!!

An unusual and interesting tale completely destroyed by a narrator who had no idea what word was coming next. The text was often rendered meaningless by the staccato delivery and pauses in all the wrong places. I won’t even mention the narrator’s inability to pronounce her words correctly.

Good story, worst narration ever
