Özet

From acclaimed columnist and political commentator Michael Harriot, a searingly smart and bitingly hilarious retelling of American history that corrects the record and showcases the perspectives and experiences of Black Americans.

America’s backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It is the story of the pilgrims on the Mayflower building a new nation. It is George Washington’s cherry tree and Abraham Lincoln’s log cabin. It is the fantastic tale of slaves that spontaneously teleported themselves here with nothing but strong backs and negro spirituals. It is a sugarcoated legend based on an almost true story.

It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights—after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie.

In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history. Combining unapologetically provocative storytelling with meticulous research based on primary sources as well as the work of pioneering Black historians, scholars, and journalists, Harriot removes the white sugarcoating from the American story, placing Black people squarely at the center. With incisive wit, Harriot speaks hilarious truth to oppressive power, subverting conventional historical narratives with little-known stories about the experiences of Black Americans. From the African Americans who arrived before 1619 to the unenslavable bandit who inspired America’s first police force, this long overdue corrective provides a revealing look into our past that is as urgent as it is necessary. For too long, we have refused to acknowledge that Americanhistory is white history. Not this one. This history is Black AF.

Genuinely funny and engaging. Laced with back home charm and down South hospitality. And yet, the topic for discussion couldn't be more serious, and life threatening. It is a testament to the members of the Black constituents of Amerikkka, that they can laugh in the face of such adversity. What has been a concerted effort to deny them their right to participate in the great experiment that is the American democratic project. This revisionist accounting is encyclopaedic in its detail, as it is ambitious in its scope. It is a Black perspective. Unapologetically so. And still, it should be required reading (listening) for anyone wanting to understand the current state of the Union. And how it can to pass.

This is the side to history that is hidden from us in plain sight. Well written, brilliantly read. We were not the complaint fools they portray us as. Bug a hard copy after you listen to the audiobook and put it proudly in your book case.

Growing up white AF in New England, this was an eye-opener for me. But I am so grateful this book was recommended to me by my lawyer brother. Absolutely amazing and a must read, for anyone who wants to distill and deconstruct some of the filtered and contrived history, many of us were taught in school RJH

I saw this book on IG, bought it, and started it on the 1st January. Michael Harriet, you are a GOAT for putting this fine piece of literature together. Black AF History is an absolute powerhouse from start to finish. His storytelling is deeply personal yet profoundly universal; he unpacks generational trauma, resilience, and Pride with a voice that's raw, honest, and illuminating. He shares intimate family memories alongside broader historical context.

This book isn't just a memoir; it's a lesson in American history through the lens of Black experience, told with clarity and purpose. I laughed, I teared up. Whether you're already familiar with Michael or discovering him for the first time, this book is a vital read, rich in wisdom, warmth, and an unsparing truth about Black America.
