People will swear they hate a show because it’s “not comic accurate,” then turn around and admit they never planned to give it a fair shot. That contradiction is where we start, using the outrage around She-Hulk to ask a bigger question: are we actually critiquing the writing, or are we reacting to a woman holding power on-screen?
We zoom out to the box office and the fandom cycle around female-led superhero movies and series, from Black Widow and She-Hulk to Ironheart, The Marvels, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 84, and the latest Supergirl talk. The pattern isn’t that every project is perfect. It’s that the reception is often negative before release, with “too woke” and “too feminist” thrown around like plot notes. We dig into how misogyny and gender bias can hide inside “serious criticism,” and why the goalposts move the moment a woman becomes the lead.
Then we make the uncomfortable connection to real life. We revisit the history of women on major party tickets and the recent era of Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris, plus what polling suggests about men shifting their votes when a woman tops the ballot. We talk about the standard excuses, “not strong enough,” “too emotional,” “not qualified,” and why those claims fall apart when you compare resumes, readiness, and the way we grade male politicians.
If any of this hits home, share the episode with a friend, subscribe for more Superhero Politics, and leave a review so more listeners can find the conversation. What’s one double standard you’ve noticed in fandom or elections?
