Fashion icon Diane Gilman never possessed any form of degree in design or fashion affiliations or a family to assist her on her way. Instead, she simply relied on her unyielding faith in her abilities. On this episode of The Academic Boardroom, Dr. Eli Joseph and Dr. Janice Gassam Asare navigate the fascinating life and career of an entrepreneurial designer who made a name for herself as the Jean Queen over the course of 60 years. In 1945, Diane was born into the family of immigrant parents from Poland and Ukraine and, already at three years old, made the decision to become a designer. Following a short visit to UCLA, she spent some time in London, where she opened her boutique in Los Angeles. Interestingly, it was in this shop where Cher came to buy all of Diane’s products. After moving to New York, Diane was introduced to Bloomingdale’s and equally discovered by QVC and HSN in her late forties. Diane discusses freely the industry she is bidding farewell to. She explains how she sees the future of the fashion industry, the disappearance of department stores, and why the idea of strong personalization and strong personal ideas matters. The podcast gets personal once Diane shares her experience of battling breast cancer at Mount Sinai Hospital and an unexpected meeting with a patient who changed her perspective about life. Following the warnings of the attending physician, Diane retires from the fashion world at 78 and dives into podcast making, starting with her program Too Young to be Old. Together with the hosts, Diane touches upon important topics such as ageism and beauty standards pressured by the media, as well as her choice of silver hair. Her message is that these years are not useless; on the contrary, they can be the most active part of one’s life. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
