She may not speak, but that doesn't mean she has nothing to say. ❤️
What if a child who cannot communicate through spoken language has so much more to share than the world realizes? And what if understanding a nonspeaking autistic child requires us to look beyond words?
In this deeply personal episode of The Animal's Voice, Ditte Young welcomes Johanna and Keplyn from Michigan, the parents of Eliana, a nonspeaking autistic girl Ditte has had the privilege of working with for several years.
Through telepathic communication, Ditte has helped Eliana's family explore their daughter's thoughts, feelings, needs, and experiences from a different perspective. For Johanna and Keplyn, this work has opened another way to connect with their daughter and understand the world she lives in.
But this conversation goes far beyond telepathy.
As the mother of a neurodivergent son, Ditte understands the emotional journey of raising a child with disabilities, the questions parents carry about their child's future, and the painful experience of watching society underestimate children simply because they communicate differently.
Together, Ditte, Johanna, and Keplyn discuss the realities of parenting a nonspeaking autistic child, the challenges of navigating a world that often equates speech with intelligence, and the ableism that children with disabilities and their families continue to encounter.
Johanna and Keplyn share what they wish the world understood about Eliana, what their daughter has taught them, and how their experiences with telepathic communication have influenced their relationship with her.
Because not being able to speak does not mean a child cannot think, feel, understand, or communicate.
And perhaps the most important question isn't whether these children have something to say, but whether we are willing to discover how they communicate.
In this episode, we explore:
- What it's really like to raise a nonspeaking autistic child
- Communication beyond spoken language
- The emotional challenges and joys of parenting a neurodivergent child
- Ableism and the misconceptions surrounding nonspeaking autism
- Why the absence of speech should never be confused with a lack of intelligence
- The fears and uncertainties parents may experience about their child's future
- What Eliana's parents wish the world understood about their daughter
- How one family has explored telepathic communication as another way of connecting
- Why dignity, patience, understanding, and respect matter for every child
