The rose may be the most famous flower in the world, yet its history extends much beyond its decorative uses in gardens. According to fossil evidence, Rosa is a very young genus, dating back about 35 million years. Nonetheless, it wasn't until some 5,000 years ago that these plants were systematically cultivated in Asia, mostly China. Roses were widely cultivated in the Middle East during the Roman Empire. They had multiple uses, including as confetti at extravagant parties, a medicinal remedy, and a key ingredient in perfume. The rose's popularity waned after Rome's fall, but it became an enduring political symbol during England's "War of the Roses" in the 15th century, when white roses stood for the House of York and red roses for the House of Lancaster.©2026 Julia Reid (P)2026 Julia Reid Biological Sciences Botany & Plants Gardening & Horticulture Science
