Even in today's media-crazed world, we appreciate a well-told story. Among the best-loved stories in Scripture are the parables of Jesus: the sheep and the goats, the lost coin, the wedding feast, the prodigal son. Through these and others, Jesus introduced His kingdom - a new order in which evil is defeated, brokenness is healed, and love prevails - in ways that His followers could understand. These vibrant accounts of daily activities made His kingdom accessible to all who would listen. Using vivid illustrations and more than a bit of corny humor, I've tried to retell many of these classic narratives with titles such as: "Buying a Farm From Jed Clampett," "Year-End Report of the Ten Mutual Funds," "The Girls Who Missed the Wedding." Woven from the stuff of everyday life, Jesus' parables become windows into God's heart and mind. I'm hoping you'll be fascinated by illustrations from the unlikely Calvin and Hobbes and Charlie Brown's friend Linus Van Pelt. Sports enthusiasts will be intrigued by Jerry Kramer's insider look at the Green Bay Packers' relentless drive for excellence in the infamous Ice Bowl. People who relax in front of the TV will find unexpected nuggets of pure gospel in "Frasier" and "The West Wing." And yes, even the "Beverly Hillbillies." Well, dogie! And the entire project is bathed with wisdom from such Christian greats as C. S. Lewis, John Stott, Billy Graham, and my uncle, the late Morris Venden. Despite being simple farm tales as we'll study together, the parables of Jesus have astounded and rocked the world for two millennia. Scholars dissect them; commentaries pore over the Greek nuances and the theological implications. Preachers have delved into them; playwrights and film makers have borrowed from them. And yet these eye-twinkling stories of lost sheep and rebellious boys and unfair labor practices continue to instruct the Church about the reality of grace and the equally hard realities of Christian life. As we read these stories by Jesus, we discover a few things. God's people are put here to bring healing to the sick, food to the hungry, and hope to the discouraged. We're here to demonstrate to the world that the Sermon on the Mount is a formula that works. In other words, we're to live as citizens of His eternal kingdom - beginning right now. So - thanks for listening! For more audio adventures, you're invited to sample our ten-book series of faith-based love stories all set in my childhood home of Thailand. Rachel Marie, little sister of the Bucky Stone many of you know from our earlier sports-laced teen series, is a superstar teacher drafted to mentor an adorable bunch of sixth-grade kids at Bangkok Christian School. I actually did that very thing in the summer of 1973, and those are still some sweet memories for me a half century later! God bless you as you listen.©2011 Pacific Press Publishing Association (P)2026 Waldo Publishing
